Spanish nationality
Spanish Nationality by Residency
How Foreign Residents Can Become Spanish Citizens
What is the Spanish nationality by residency
Spanish nationality by residency is one of the most common legal pathways for foreign nationals who wish to become Spanish citizens after living in Spain for a certain period of time.
Through this process, a foreign resident who has lived legally and continuously in Spain may apply for Spanish nationality once the required residency period has been completed. This pathway allows long-term residents to integrate fully into Spanish society and enjoy the rights associated with Spanish citizenship.
To apply for Spanish nationality through residency, applicants must demonstrate that they have maintained legal residence in Spain for the required period, have good civic conduct, and have successfully integrated into Spanish society.
For most applicants, the general requirement is ten years of legal and continuous residence in Spain immediately prior to the application. However, Spanish law provides several cases where the required residence period can be significantly reduced.

Using a clear and structured approach to preparing the application is essential, as the nationality process requires specific documentation and careful compliance with legal requirements.
Residency Period Required for Spanish Nationality
The standard residency requirement for Spanish nationality is ten years of continuous legal residence in Spain. This period must be completed immediately before submitting the nationality application.
However, Spanish legislation establishes several reduced residency periods depending on the applicant’s personal circumstances or nationality:
5 Years of Residence
A reduced residency period of five years applies to individuals who have been granted refugee status in Spain.
2 Years of Residence
Nationals from certain countries benefit from a shorter residency requirement of two years. This applies to citizens of:
- Latin American countries
- Andorra
- The Philippines
- Equatorial Guinea
- Portugal
It also applies to individuals of Sephardic origin.
This is one of the most common reductions used by expatriates who relocate to Spain from Latin America.
Cases Where Only 1 Year of Residence Is Required
In certain specific situations, applicants may qualify for Spanish nationality after just one year of legal residence in Spain.
This applies to individuals who meet one of the following conditions:
- People born in Spain
- Individuals who did not exercise their right to Spanish nationality by option in due time
- Individuals who have been under the legal guardianship or foster care of a Spanish citizen or institution for two consecutive years
- Applicants who have been married to a Spanish citizen for at least one year and are not legally separated
- Widows or widowers of Spanish citizens, provided the couple was not legally separated at the time of death
- Individuals born outside Spain whose parents or grandparents were originally Spanish
These situations allow certain applicants to access Spanish nationality much faster than the standard ten-year period.
Requirements to Apply for Spanish Nationality by Residency
In addition to completing the required residency period, applicants must meet several legal and administrative requirements before submitting the nationality application.
Legal and Continuous Residence
Applicants must prove that they have lived legally in Spain for the required period without significant interruptions.
Good Civic Conduct Requirement
Authorities evaluate the applicant’s behavior and compliance with Spanish laws. This includes maintaining a clean legal history and respecting local regulations.
Integration into Spanish Society
Applicants must demonstrate their integration in Spain, which often includes passing official nationality exams such as the CCSE test and, in some cases, the DELE Spanish language test.
Clean Criminal Record
Applicants must show that they do not have criminal records either in Spain or in their country of origin.

All official documents submitted with the application must be valid, legalized where necessary, and properly translated when required.
