There’s a specific kind of light that only exists in Southern Spain. It’s a golden, warm glow that doesn’t just hit the whitewashed walls of a village; it hits your soul. At Relocation for Expats, we see it every day: that spark in someone’s eyes when they realize that “home” isn’t necessarily where they were born, but where they finally feel they can breathe.
As February 28th—Día de Andalucía—approaches, we celebrate the culture that makes moving to Andalusia the ultimate goal for thousands of expats worldwide. At Relocation for Expats, we guide you through this transition with empathy and expertise.
Retiring to Andalucía, Spain? Why the World is Looking South
You aren’t alone in this dream. Official data shows that the number of Americans choosing Spain as their new home has hit record highs recently, with Spain consistently ranking as the #1 destination in Europe for quality of life and ease of settling in.
It’s not just about the 300 days of sunshine or the “calorcito”—it’s about the hospitality. Andalusians are famously warm, open-minded, and helpful, making the transition from “expat” to “local” feel incredibly natural. Whether it’s the passion of a flamenco performance in a hidden Seville alley or the simple pleasure of a cold rebujito at a local feria, Andalucía offers a richness that “checks every box.”

Spain was the "Perfect Fit" for Steve
Most people think they know Spain. They’ve seen the Sagrada Familia or spent a day in Barcelona while on a cruise. But the real magic happens when you head South.
One of our clients, Steve, captured this feeling perfectly when he traded the frantic pace of Chicago for the Mediterranean breeze:
“I realized that moving to Andalucía, Spain was the only choice that was the perfect ‘fit’ for me, I remember talking to friends in the US about retiring to Spain. Most had only seen the tourist hubs for a day or two. But as I explored Southern Spain, I realized Andalucía was the only place that was the perfect ‘fit’ for me.
As a former Chicagoan, I always considered myself a big city boy, but one who needs and enjoys an escape where I can explore, walk, and enjoy the outdoors. Andalucia has river valleys, arid deserts, coastal cities, small fishing towns, whitewashed villages, orchards and vineyards, deep gorges, the entire Sierra Nevada Mountain range, and the great Mediterranean sea.
I knew I could enjoy living in a city the size of Málaga (with one of the best climates in Europe), while having easy access to all of Southern Spain by car or train, for the wide range of the different locations I could continue to explore. I have all that here.
As a retiree, I found that I could slow down my former big city pace to enjoy the laid-back, leisure-oriented lifestyle that the people of Andalucia have always seemed to live. Málaga has that large Mediterranean city access, but also often feels like a small town.
The people of the region are largely warm, friendly, hospitable, helpful, and open-minded. Life here mostly revolves around social gatherings, with so many holidays, festivals and street fairs that are abundant in music, dance, wine, and really good food.”
Steve discovered the joy of the ‘sobremesa’—that beautiful Spanish tradition of sitting around for hours after a meal, letting the conversation flow as freely as the wine. He found a place where he could finally slow down and embrace a leisure-oriented lifestyle without losing the vibrance of a city like Málaga.
You aren’t alone in your dream. Moving to Andalusia has become a top priority for North Americans. Recent data indicates that Spain is consistently ranked as the #1 destination in Europe for quality of life, with a record number of US citizens applying for residency to enjoy the high-standard medical services and welcoming community.
