Spain Solar Eclipse 2026: What Expats Need to Know Before August 12

Imagine a summer evening in Spain. You’re outside, the sun is slowly approaching the horizon… and suddenly, day begins to turn into night.

On August 12, Spain will experience a total solar eclipse, with the path of totality crossing parts of the country. Even more remarkable, it will be the first total solar eclipse visible from the Iberian Peninsula in more than a century—the last one occurred in 1912.

For expats living here, it’s one of those rare experiences that goes beyond visiting another monument or discovering a new city. It’s a chance to experience something truly historic from the place you now call home.

Before you look up, there are a few things worth knowing

Choose your viewing spot in advance. The eclipse will take place late in the day, close to sunset, so look for a location with a clear view toward the western horizon. The Spanish National Geographic Institute (IGN) has an official interactive map where you can check the eclipse timing and visibility for your municipality.
Most importantly: protect your eyes. Regular sunglasses are not enough. The IGN recommends eclipse glasses certified under ISO 12312-2, and children should always be supervised. Good news: Spain’s Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities (MICIU) and Grupo Social ONCE will distribute two million certified eclipse glasses for free through the Una vista única. Planning to capture it with your phone? Pointing your camera directly at the Sun without proper protection can damage its sensor. You don’t necessarily need an expensive accessory: one option is to place certified solar-filter material from eclipse glasses securely over the phone’s camera lenses, completely covering the optics without leaving gaps for sunlight.
Plan your journey too. Large numbers of people are expected to travel to viewing areas, so avoid last-minute trips and check official traffic and local information before heading out.
And don’t rush home when it’s over! The Perseid meteor shower will also be reaching its peak around the same time, meaning August 12 could become a pretty unforgettable Spanish summer night.

Good to Know: Enjoy the Eclipse Responsibly

August is high wildfire-risk season in Spain. If you're heading to a viewpoint, rural area or natural setting, avoid lighting fires, never throw cigarette butts, and don't park on dry vegetation, as hot vehicle components can potentially start a fire.
