The IKEA Stuffed Toy and the Art of Belonging

When the news broke about Punch, the young monkey at the Tokio Zoo who was rejected by his group and spent his days clinging to an IKEA stuffed toy, my heart didn’t just ache—it resonated.

There is a haunting beauty in that image: a living being, displaced and lonely, finding solace in something that represents “home” in the most artificial yet necessary way. As I watched him hold onto that plush toy, I couldn’t help but think of us. The expats. The dreamers. The ones who pack their lives into suitcases and cross oceans.

The "Plush Toys" We Carry

When we move to a new country, we all carry our own “IKEA toys.” They are the memories of our culture, the specific scent of a family kitchen, or the music of our mother tongue. In the beginning, when the new city feels like a labyrinth of strangers, we cling to these things. We hold them tight because they are the only things that tell us who we are when the world around us doesn’t yet know our name.

But here is the philosophical truth: a stuffed toy is a temporary comfort, not a permanent home. To truly thrive, we need more than just memories of where we came from; we need a circle that welcomes us, an environment where we fit, and a community where we belong.

Since my arrival in Spain, I have been deeply drawn to the multiculturalism of Madrid. It is a breathtaking point of encounter where hundreds of nationalities converge, creating a tapestry of integration. Madrid doesn’t ask you to erase your past; it invites you to weave it into its future.

Watching Punch made me realize that finding a space where we can involve ourselves is fundamental. Spain has been that space for me. It is a place where I feel I can continue to grow without losing my roots, letting myself be marveled by a new culture while my house slowly, day by day, transforms into a home.

Belonging is a Human Right
